welcome to girlfriends with aging parents

parent with motor scooter & no helmet

motor-scooterMy mom (age 83 yo) called me at home from Sun City, a retirement community in Palm Springs, CA. She said she had slipped off a wooden chair with wheels and hit her head, bracing her fall with her arm. My mom didn’t think she needed to go to the ER or Urgent Care. Five days later, however, she thought it best to get checked out and had my dad (age 84) take her to the ER. My dad dropped her off at the ER and said he would pick her up after she had been seen. Upon discharge she called him to pick her up.  No fractures or broken bones (thankfully) just soft tissue injury but the doctor placed her arm in a sling. They walked out of the ER together. She was looking for the car but didn’t see it. My mom didn’t see their car because my dad had come to pick her up on his motor scooter!  She’d never ridden on the back of it and was terrified.  She said she was scarred but obeyed, not thinking to call a taxi or senior transit. Fortunately a Police Officer was nearby and approached my dad. The Officer told my dad he wasn’t going anywhere and would drive my mom wherever she wanted. The Officer clearly saw that my mom was petrified. The Officer drove my mom home and my dad rode home alone on his scooter. Both home safely, my dad had nothing to say. SERIOUSLY……what was he thinking??????

granddaughter dilemma

elderly driverDriving in the car with my grandfather is like playing Russian Roulette with my life. Every time I get into the car I pray that we get to our destination and back unharmed! I love my grandfather but he likes to drive faster than his age, which is 89. I think the scariest part about driving with my grandfather is that he has horrible balance, which in my eyes makes him close to unfit to drive. He drives a Prius, which he speeds in constantly. The reason for his driving above the speed limit is that the engine is so quiet he says he can’t hear it. I think to myself, “what about just looking at the speedometer like normal people do?” I try to suggest that I might drive but he always says girls can’t drive. What do I do?
